From Malta to Japan: Applying for the Arts Council Malta International Participation Scheme

Applying for the Arts Council Malta International Participation Scheme became one of the most important steps in my artistic journey so far. As a self-taught artist working primarily in sculptural abstract wall art inspired by anime culture, I always felt that international exposure was essential for my development. Malta’s art scene, while growing, can still feel limiting at times, especially for artists exploring unconventional or niche mediums.

When I discovered the opportunity to participate in the AiRK (Artist-in-Residence Kobe) programme in Japan, I immediately knew it aligned with both my artistic identity and long-term goals. Japan has influenced my creativity for years through anime, storytelling, aesthetics, and the relationship between art and everyday life. The possibility of experiencing that environment as an artist rather than simply as a visitor felt incredibly important.

The application process itself was both challenging and educational. Preparing the proposal forced me to clearly define not only my artistic goals, but also why international mobility matters for emerging Maltese artists. Funding applications can sometimes feel intimidating, especially as an emerging artist without decades of exhibitions behind you, but the process taught me the importance of persistence and believing in the value of your work.

The support from Arts Council Malta made this opportunity financially achievable and allowed me to fully commit to the residency experience. More importantly, it reinforced the idea that Maltese artists should continue exploring opportunities beyond our borders, even when the path feels uncertain.

One thing I learned through this process is that rejection, setbacks, and self-doubt are all part of an artist’s career. International opportunities are not reserved only for established artists. Sometimes all it takes is one application, one residency, or one curator who understands your vision.

This experience encouraged me not only to continue applying internationally but also to openly share the process with other artists who may feel hesitant about pursuing similar opportunities.
